THE SWISS AVENUE
WOMEN'S GUILD

HISTORIC
SWISS AVENUE

RESOURCES

5728   5744

YEAR BUILT: 1923
ARCHITECT/BUILDER: Bertram Hill
ORIGINAL OWNER: W.O. Womack
ORIGINAL
DESCRIPTION:
The large residence is basically a Georgian design. Typical elements of this period are interpreted in a larger scale and in a more elaborate manner than in the original Georgian Period. This is most easily seen in the slightly projecting center pavilion which utilizes a large order of pilasters, and the smaller orders used on the porches. A Palladian window most normally located in the second story is, in this residence, incorporated in a dormer on the roof. The triple windows below produce the effect of a two-story Palladian element capped by a deep cornice.
OF INTEREST: This home was built for W.O. Womack who unfortunately died before its completion. Mr. Womack did, however, add many personal details to the house, including a solarium with a grotto surfaced entirely in Rookwood pottery and tile.

The magnolia was chosen as the Guild's symbol
because it represents Southern beauty and strength.
