THE SWISS AVENUE
WOMEN'S GUILD

HISTORIC
SWISS AVENUE

RESOURCES

5822   5908

YEAR BUILT: 1924
ARCHITECT/BUILDER: D.A. Barnett
ORIGINAL OWNER: Henry C. Morris
ORIGINAL
DESCRIPTION:
A well executed arched porte cochere, small windows with hearldic designs flanking the chimney, and wooden gabled dormer constitute the most overly eclectic features while the remainder of the house has vestiges of the Progressive Mode with several grouped windows, brick piers at the recessed porch, and hipped roof. The house has an H-shaped central hall plan, but dissimilar facade treatment of otherwise symmentrical pavillions is a concession to contemporary taste for picturesque asymmetry.
OF INTEREST: This home was built at a cost of $18,000, and its first occupant was Henry Morris, general manager and vice president of Dallas Gas Company.

The magnolia was chosen as the Guild's symbol
because it represents Southern beauty and strength.
